Auto loans — where the dealer makes money and your score takes hits
The monthly payment is negotiable; the APR is where the money hides. And every application outside the rate-shop window costs you points for nothing.
The facts
- 01All auto-loan hard pulls within a focused window count as ONE inquiry on FICO scores — 45 days on newer versions, 14 on older ones. Do all your financing shopping inside one window, starting with your bank or credit union.
- 02Get preapproved BEFORE you set foot in the dealership, then let the dealer try to beat that rate. Dealer-arranged financing can include a markup over the rate you actually qualify for — the difference is dealer profit, and it is invisible unless you have a competing offer in hand.
- 03Judge loans on APR and total cost, never the monthly payment: stretching 60 months to 84 lowers the payment while raising total interest and putting you underwater (owing more than the car is worth) for years.
- 04Your credit score IS the discount: industry rate data (Experian's quarterly automotive finance report) consistently shows deep-subprime borrowers paying multiples of super-prime APRs. Fixing utilization and clearing errors before applying is worth more than any dealer negotiation.
- 05Auto lenders report monthly. A payment 30+ days late lands on your report as a payment-history (35%) hit — if a payment will be late, call the lender before the due date; hardship options exist that do not report.
