Credit utilization — the fastest number you can move
Utilization is the one score factor you can change this month — if you know when it gets reported.
The facts
- 01The rule of thumb: keep total utilization under 30% of your limits; the top-scoring band commonly uses under 10%. Lower is better — there is no penalty for using almost nothing.
- 02What gets reported is usually the statement balance on your closing date — not what you owe after you pay. Paying before the closing date is how you report a low number even in a heavy-spend month.
- 03Utilization has no memory in FICO: last month's 80% does not haunt this month's 5%. It is one of the few factors that recovers as soon as the next statement reports.
- 04Asking for a credit-limit increase lowers utilization without paying a dime — but some issuers run a hard pull; ask them first.
