Building credit from zero — the four legitimate doors
No credit is not a life sentence. Four doors, all legitimate, in order of speed.
The facts
- 01Secured card: you put down a refundable deposit (commonly $200-$500) which becomes your limit. It reports to all three bureaus like any card. Six months of on-time use builds a real score.
- 02Credit-builder loan: the lender holds the money in a savings account while you pay into it monthly; payments report to the bureaus; you get the funds at the end. Offered by credit unions and online lenders.
- 03Authorized user: being added to an old, well-paid card can seed your length of history — the account does not have to be used by you, and the primary holder owes nothing new. The card issuer must report AU history for it to help.
- 04Rent reporting: services can add on-time rent payments to your bureau file — historically rent never counted. Not all scoring models weigh it; it helps most where files are thin.
- 05Whatever the door: one card used lightly and paid on time beats five cards managed badly. Age and history compound — start one account, protect it, let it grow.
